"Fabulous Flunkies"

Any dog that does not meet the health or training standards of NEADS is placed as a pet. The dog may have been obtained from a pound or shelter, donated by its owner, or raised in our puppy program.

If you are considering an application for a "flunk out" (as we affectionately call these dogs) please be advised of the following information:

1) Most of the dogs being placed are mixed breeds. The majority of Golden or Labrador Retrievers raised in our puppy program are returned to the family that raised it if the dog is dropped from training.

2) A minimum of $150.00 is charged for each dog. The amount covers the veterinary care given to the dog. Each dog has had its vaccinations, been tested for heartworm and been spayed or neutered.

3) The dog that is being placed may have obedience or behavior problems. You would be told the details of the dog's training and why it failed our program. The dog will also have been temperament tested and its personality will be discussed with you.

4) NEADS offers training classes and problem clinics for the family dog at our center in Princeton. These are offered at a reduced rate to anyone adopting a dog.

5) The dog is not offered on a "first come, first serve" basis. The dog's trainer tries to match the dog's physical characteristics and personality to the individual information received on the application. An appointment to meet the dog and speak with its trainer would be the next step in the adoption process if we have a dog that fits your description. More than one applicant may be interviewed for each dog.

6) Your application will be kept on file for four months. To be kept on the waiting list, you would need to call or e-mail to update.

7) Preference is given to New England residents in order to facilitate our adoption process.

8) If you include your e-mail address on your application, a blanket mail notice and profile will be sent when we have a dog available.

We hope this information will be helpful to you and will have explained our adoption process. Our "fabulous flunkouts" are very special to us. We want them to have the best possible owner.
